In September 2023, a commemoration ceremony took place at the Beau Bassin Jewish Detainees Memorial and Information Centre. This was part of a reunion of the ex-detainees and their families who were deported to the island in 1940 after trying to escape from Europe to British Mandated Palestine. The British authorities deported over 1500 Jews to the British colony of Mauritius, where they were imprisoned until the end of the war.
